Happy Thursday, Northern Virginia!

In today’s update:

⚽ The World Cup is coming to D.C. in a big way. A new fan zone on the National Mall will bring soccer, music, food and global energy to the city all summer.

💾 Micron’s Manassas campus is taking on a bigger role in America’s chip supply chain. With U.S. senators, state leaders and local officials on hand, the company celebrated new memory chip production tied to thousands of jobs, national security and Virginia’s growing tech economy.

🚗 Waymo’s self-driving cars aren’t picking up passengers in Virginia yet, but they’re already mapping streets in Alexandria and Arlington. The move raises a bigger question: how close is Northern Virginia to seeing robotaxis on local roads?

⚽ The National Mall Is Becoming a World Cup Watch Party

D.C. is turning the National Mall into a global soccer gathering spot, even without hosting World Cup matches.

Driving the news: D.C. will host a free FIFA World Cup Fan Zone on the National Mall from June 11 through July 19, tying the tournament to America’s 250th birthday celebration.

Details: The fan zone will sit between 3rd and 4th streets, near the U.S. Capitol.

  • Fans can watch live match screenings.

  • Team USA games will be shown no matter the kickoff time.

  • Every knockout-round match will also be shown.

  • The site will include food, music, cultural programming, youth activities and interactive exhibits.

  • The fan zone will usually open one hour before the day’s first match.

Why it matters: The fan zone gives locals, visitors, restaurants, hotels and small businesses a new way to benefit from World Cup energy during what could be a packed summer for the city.

Between the lines: D.C. is using its global identity to stay connected to the World Cup, even though the city is not hosting matches.

The location near the Capitol also puts soccer fans close to other America 250 events.

What’s next: Organizers will share more details soon about programming, partners and the full fan experience.

🎥 What Amazon’s New Data Center Means for Northern Virginia

💾 Micron’s Manassas Expansion Puts Virginia at the Center of U.S. Chipmaking

Driving the news: Micron marked its “Memory Made in the USA” celebration at its Manassas campus, highlighting new 1-alpha DRAM wafer manufacturing capabilities and a larger domestic push for memory chip production.

Details:

  • U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner joined state and local leaders for the ceremony.

  • Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the expansion is tied to 19,000 new jobs and production of 30,000 DDR4 RAM wafers per month.

  • Officials pointed to the CHIPS and Science Act as a key driver behind more U.S.-based semiconductor production.

  • Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer framed domestic chipmaking as a national security priority.

Why it matters: For Manassas and Prince William County, Micron’s growth means more high-tech jobs, a stronger local tax base and a bigger place in a supply chain that touches cars, medical devices, defense, aerospace and everyday electronics.

The big picture: Memory chips are a core part of modern technology.

Bringing more production to Virginia helps reduce reliance on overseas supply chains while giving Northern Virginia a clearer stake in the future of U.S. manufacturing.

By the numbers:

  • 19,000 new jobs cited by Micron

  • 30,000 DDR4 RAM wafers expected per month

  • 61,000 approved patents referenced by Micron

  • Production at a second Boise fab expected by the end of 2028

Between the lines: The event doubled as a federal, state and local show of support for chipmaking in Virginia.

It also gave Warner and Kaine a chance to connect the project to bipartisan work in Congress.

What’s next: Micron’s Manassas production will be part of a wider U.S. buildout that includes Idaho and New York, as the company expands its domestic manufacturing footprint.

🚗 Waymo Cars Are Now Mapping Streets in Alexandria and Arlington

Waymo is taking its first step into Northern Virginia, sending cars to map streets in Alexandria and Arlington before any possible self-driving taxi launch.

Driving the news: Waymo has started bringing vehicles to Virginia to map Alexandria and Arlington, according to Wired, even though self-driving cars are not yet legal in the commonwealth.

Details:

  • Waymo says the mapping is prep work in case Virginia later allows fully autonomous ride-hailing.

  • The company says it does not currently have plans to launch commercial service in Virginia.

  • Drivers will operate the cars during the mapping process.

  • Waymo told local leaders in Alexandria and Arlington before starting the work.

Why it matters: This gives local officials, residents and planners time to see what Waymo is doing before any service starts.

If Virginia moves forward, the region could gain another travel option while shaping safety rules early.

The big picture: Waymo is expanding its footprint across the U.S., and Northern Virginia could become part of its future East Coast plans if state lawmakers create a legal path for self-driving ride-hailing.

By the numbers:

  • Waymo says the process from mapping to vehicles operating on roads can take 12 to 18 months.

  • The company operates self-driving taxis in 11 U.S. cities, according to the report.

  • Waymo lists 21 additional cities as “up next,” including Washington, D.C., and Baltimore.

  • A Virginia lawmaker told ARLNow he does not expect self-driving cars to launch in the state until at least 2028.

Between the lines: Mapping does not mean robotaxis are coming right away. It means Waymo is building the street-level data its cars would need if state law changes.

What’s next: Virginia lawmakers are weighing a bill that would create a framework for self-driving vehicle rules in the commonwealth.

The bottom line: Waymo’s cars are not picking up passengers in Alexandria or Arlington yet, but their mapping work shows Northern Virginia is now on the company’s radar.
